Renal Medicine

Nephrology, another name for renal medicine, is a specialty area of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of kidney disorders. The kidneys are essential for blood filtering, electrolyte balance, blood pressure regulation, and the synthesis of vital hormones. Chronic kidney disease (CKD), acute kidney injury (AKI), glomerulonephritis, kidney stones, and hypertension associated with kidney dysfunction are among the common conditions treated by renal medicine. In order to maintain kidney function and avoid complications, early diagnosis and intervention are essential.

Nephrologists, or renal specialists, evaluate kidney health using a variety of diagnostic techniques, including imaging studies, blood tests, urine analyses, and kidney biopsies. Depending on the severity of the condition, treatment options may include dialysis, medication, lifestyle modifications, or kidney transplantation. In addition, renal medicine places a strong emphasis on educating patients about proper nutrition, fluid balance, and managing underlying diseases like diabetes and hypertension, which are major causes of kidney damage.
