RENAL MEDICINE

Ferrotok Plus

Lactoferrin 50mg, Disodium Guanosine 5-Monophosphate 5mg & Elemental Iron 27mg (FBG) Tablets

Indication

Management strategies for iron deficiency anemia and anemia of chronic disease.

Disease

Anemia is a common complication in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), typically developing gradually and worsening as kidney function declines. According to recent studies, over 95% of patients with severe anemia are in CKD stages 4 or 5.

  • Absolute (or true) iron deficiency – characterized by depleted iron stores due to inadequate intake, blood loss, or impaired absorption.
  • Functional iron deficiency – occurs when iron stores are adequate, but its availability for erythropoiesis is impaired, often due to inflammation or disrupted iron metabolism.

Mechanism of Action

  • Decreases hepcidin levels by modulating the ferroportin–hepcidin axis, thereby enhancing iron mobilization.
  • Reduces ferritin-bound iron stores, increasing the availability of functional iron.
  • Mitigates inflammation by downregulating inflammatory mediators.
  • Suppresses inflammatory pathways, further reducing hepcidin production and enhancing systemic iron availability.

Advantages

  • Restoration of Iron Homeostasis
  • Ferrous bisglycinate has at least two-fold higher biovailability/absorption compared to "conventional" iron salts, e.g., ferrous sulfate and ferrous fumarate.
  • Useful in the treatment of both True/absolute iron deficiency anemia as well as Functional Iron deficiency anemia
