Cephulac

Lactitol Monohydrate Syrup 66.67 % W/V

Introduction

Lactitol Monohydrate is a laxative used for the treatment of constipation and the prevention of hepatic encephalopathy (brain dysfunction caused by liver disease). It helps regulate bowel movements and supports the removal of toxins from the body when liver function is compromised.

Indication

To delay the Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Progression.

Disease

Constipation is commonly defined as having fewer than three bowel movements per week. It is a frequent issue in individuals with Stage 4 Kidney Failure. Contributing factors may include limited fluid intake due to concerns about swelling (fluid retention) and a reduced intake of dietary fiber, often resulting from potassium or phosphorus dietary restrictions. These changes can impair regular bowel movements and lead to constipation.

Mechanism of Action

Constez increases osmotic pressure in the intestinal lumen, leading to an increase in fecal volume, which stimulates peristaltic movement and promotes bowel evacuation. It has a low glycemic index (~4), making it suitable for diabetic patients. Additionally, it exhibits a prebiotic effect, helping to maintain a healthy colonic microflora.

Dosage

One sachet daily, or as directed by a registered medical practitioner.
