Levetrsoetam 250 mg/500 mg Tablets

Introduction

Levetiracetam 250mg is an anti-convulsant medicine used to treat epilepsy. It helps control partial onset seizures, myoclonic seizures, and tonic-clonic seizures by slowing down abnormal electrical activity in the brain. It is typically used either alone or with other seizure medications.

Mechanism of Action
  • Selective Seizure Control: Levetiracetam binds selectively to synaptic plasma membranes in the central nervous system without affecting peripheral tissues.
  • Prevents Hypersynchronization: It inhibits abnormal burst firing of neurons, preventing the spread of seizure activity, while maintaining normal brain function.
  • Exact Mechanism: Not completely understood, but crucial for preventing epileptic episodes without general suppression of brain activity.
Uses
  • Management of partial onset seizures
  • Treatment of myoclonic seizures
  • Control of tonic-clonic seizures

Note: It controls seizures but does not cure epilepsy. Seizure control is maintained only with continuous use.
